If you are interested in learning how to build using traditional materials and methods, the Carpentry and Joinery - Heritage (formerly Carpentry and Millwork - Heritage) program is for you. Designed for students interested in specializing in the preservation, renovation, and restoration of historical architecture in Canada, this two-year diploma program is unique in Canada. In the first year, you concentrate on contemporary construction techniques including framing, roofing and finish carpentry. The second year focuses on traditional carpentry, including timber framing, log building and cedar roofing. You also have the opportunity to refine your joinery skills working on such projects as moulding reproduction, stair-casing and the reproduction and restoration of traditional doors and windows. Throughout the program, you also learn about historical Canadian architecture, construction methods and preservation techniques. In the end, you'll have the skills and knowledge you need to produce the high quality work demanded in the field of heritage carpentry.
Graduates work in new construction, renovation, and restoration for small and large employers. Some go on to complete an apprenticeship and earn their Certificate of Qualification as a licensed carpenter.
