The Public Relations program requires testing as part of the admissions process.

What are the tests?
Three areas are tested: English, general media knowledge and math.

How long are the tests?
The tests take from 2 ½ hours to 3 hours to complete.

Why do I have to take an English test?
The English test evaluation students’ skills in three areas: reading, vocabulary and grammar.

This part of the test is multiple choice. There’s also an essay to assess your ability to communicate clearly and coherently, using proper grammar.
Reason: Jobs for graduates require you be able to read material and quickly understand it, be able to acquire a specialized vocabulary on top of an excellent general vocabulary and write and speak using proper grammar. A high level of proficiency is required.
Tips for success: Pick up a book of tests (SATs or GEDs) at any bookstore and do the practice exercises.

What is the general knowledge Media test about?
Students are assessed on a number of general knowledge areas (Canadian and international), including media, arts, entertainment, sports, history, geography, government and newsmakers. This portion of the test is multiple choice.
Reason: You need to have an above-average understanding of the world around you. There are a number of subject areas, so, as a well-rounded individual, you should be able to score well even if you are weak in some subject areas.
Tips for success: Read the newspaper every day, read a news magazine such as Maclean’s of the Canadian issue of Time, read summaries of world history, look over maps of the world.

What will be on the math test?
The mathematics testing (problem-solving) is a multiple choice test where most questions call for very basic math (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication).
Reason: You will require a very basic ability in math (mostly arithmetic) in order to do such tasks as create and balance budgets for different class projects.
Tips for success: Bookstores carry books with math tests that you can use to sharpen your skills
