Music Industry Arts

recording studio girlThis program prepares students to work as producers and engineers in today's music industry. Students produce multi-track recordings in a professional studio environment, demonstrating a full range of audio engineering and music productions skills. They learn to operate both digital and analogue multi-track recording systems and signal flow in a typical studio operation according to established procedures involved in music recording sessions. Emphasis is placed on the study of the music industry as a whole and the business skills involved. Legal guidelines pertaining to business contracts, mechanical licensing, song publishing, copyright and synchronization licensing are explored. Students have the opportunity to record musical instruments including the voice by matching the characteristics of different types of microphones and various microphone techniques with a selected application. Students read and write basic music notation with the understanding of rhythm, intervals, chording and lead sheets as well as assess the acoustical characteristics of a recording environment. Historic and current trends in the music industry are explored.
It is an advantage to the student to have a background in music theory, knowledge and appreciation for all types of music, an interest in the recording industry and its role in today’s entertainment field, as well as experience with Pro Tools, MIDI and other computer based recording applications.
